CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Flat Escardos
CANON: Lord El Melloi II Case Files
HISTORY:
- While the Wiki does have Flat's involvement in Fate/Strange Fake, it does not include his involvement in a previous series, The Lord El Melloi II Case Files.
Flat is a student in the Department of Modern Magecraft, led by Lord El Melloi II, previously known as Waver Velvet. He's known as one of the two shining jewels of the classroom, along with Svin Glascheit, though he is also known for being one of the most troublesome students in there. Among the classroom that's full of prodigies he stands out as a prodigy of his own level in terms of magecraft...but also as one of the biggest idiots when it comes to common sense, or lack thereof. That's why he's been in the classroom for five years (and will be there for ten, by the time Fate/Strange Fake comes around) despite Waver always graduating his students as quickly as he can and the fact that, technically, the Clock Tower serves as a University--and Flat had only started there when he was 10.
Previous to arriving to the Department of Modern Magecraft, he had been cycled around all of the other Departments, where he would only last a month or two. Teachers would quickly become fed up with him, his idiosyncrasies, and the fact that he quickly would surpass all of them--something they all took offense to. It's with a letter of recommendation and the threat of being expelled from the school that he ended up at Waver's doorstep, and he was the first person to take him in and keep him. Five years later and Flat has caused a number of headaches and ulcers for the poor Professor, but is happier than ever there, occasionally participating in some of Waver's magical detective adventures and nearly dying every time.
STRENGTHS:
- Curious: One of Flat's key personality traits is how curious he is about everything around him. While it is difficult for him to pay attention to his own duties, he is always interested in what others are doing. He's the type to search 'horse' on wikipedia and somehow end up doing a deep dive until 4 am about the influence of horses in ancient Mongolia and perhaps even deciding to learn Mongol as well. This is how he gets most of his information and he is a well of trivia. He'll rant about Moses' involvement in Magecraft or the inner workings of a car or anything beyond or in between those things. He knows that there is so much in the world that needs to be learned, and he'll always be willing to learn anything that even remotely piques his interest.
Genius: It is not an overstatement to call Flat a genius when it comes to Magecraft, especially when he is recognized as such, not only by his fellow students, but also by his Professor and those in the higher ranks of the Clock Tower. Even Touko Aozaki, who stands in the highest rank in the Mages' Association, recognizes that Flat's control of Mana and Od (the two sources of magical energy in the fate/ world) is on par with a Brand rank--the second highest in the Association--and that's while still clearly holding back. As stated in canon, his calling card is the ability to do things that would be impossible to other Mages, both his age and above. Do you need someone to decode the Voynich Manuscript for you? Flat's your guy!
Loyal: While Flat lacks things such as morals and a drive of his own, what he does have is an undying loyalty for those that are willing to accept him and treat him as a human being. This is exactly why he is so attached to Lord El Melloi II, as he was the first person to see through Flat's facade and the first to treat him like a human and not like a ticking time bomb. Because of this, he is willing to try and put aside his own strangeness and lack of morals in order to follow his Professor's path. Even though he doesn't know how to differentiate between right and wrong on his own, he's able to do so by using his Professor's morals as a crutch--to the point of being willing to put his life on the line because it's "something the Professor would do". To those that accept him and all of his strangeness, Flat will basically be willing to do anything for them.
FLAWS:
- Eccentric: Flat's biggest set back seems to be the fact that he seems to be operating on a completely different wavelength than everyone else. Ideas as ridiculous as approaching the person that attacked you in order to explain how they can improve are things that come naturally to Flat and he doesn't see anything wrong with it. Even when others try to explain to him, it's basically like speaking to him in a foreign language. This eccentricity, while usually rather harmless and just outright annoying, can turn dangerous rather quickly-- especially when you find out that he sees people as parts for something bigger. It caused even his own parents to reject him, thinking of him as inhuman, and trying to kill him quite a few times.
Amorality: Flat's second biggest flaw is the general lack of morals that he has. Things like right or wrong mean little more to him than being mere words. Things such as murder aren't wrong because they're atrocities, but because they're inefficient. While it usually leads him to doing rather innocent things like getting his Professor indecent birthday presents or calling him horrible nicknames as a form of 'respect', there are times when his behavior becomes more unsettling, and even dangerous. He's willing to even go as far as trying out horrifying experiments on his friends without their permission--because who needs that, right? They're friends! As his future Servant puts it--they fear that Flat will end up killing someone and thinking that they'll just need to apologize.
Secretive: While he's someone that's rather honest (perhaps, a little too much) with things, it is also true that he is quite a secretive person. After all, he has been hiding his real name for years, even from those that he considers close (even his Professor). Aside from that, he's also willing to hide his own emotions and thoughts as necessary, preferring to play the role of a fool in order to keep people from being afraid of him. He doesn't have any ill intentions behind his secrecy--he just wants to be seen as a human.
CANON ABILITIES:
- Magic Circuits: Flat's Magic Circuits run like capillaries in his body, high in number and all of them are very high quality. Because of this, he has a high amount of Od (personal magical energy) and Mana (magical energy from the environment) which he can control expertly in order to perform an endless number of spells without running out of energy. In other words, he's similar to a nuclear battery that runs on Mana instead of nuclear fusion.
Magic Resistance: Due to his excellent Magic Circuits, this also allows Flat to have a high passive defense against curses. In other words, most low level spells will happily bounce off of him without him even noticing it. It takes a great deal of magical energy for him to actually feel a spell.
(That said, he is still a squishy human and actually very weak physically, so a good kick is enough to knock him out)
Presence Detection: Flat is capable of sensing presences from far away with very high accuracy. People, magical beings, and even Mana can be detected by him to a level that only non-human beings such as vampires and very perceptive Servants such as Enkidu can compare.
Chaos Magecraft: Based on the real Chaos Magic, Chaos Magecraft is a branch of Modern Magecraft that allows the user to take any spell and modify it to their preference, practically making it their own. In practice, this type of Magecraft is highly inefficient at best, and downright impossible at worst, but Flat is lucky enough to have an affinity with the element that makes up all of the current Mana in the world: Void. Between this and his excellent control of Mana, he is capable of taking any spell, old or new, and using it like his own, without regards to any other outside elements. Unlike traditional Magecraft which works on the World's foundations as its basis, Flat's Magecraft creates its own foundations at the time the spell is cast-- like building a new CPU every time you wanted to run a new program. Flat is capable of doing this as easy as breathing, making him capable of doing most types of Magecraft by just believing that he can do it.
"Hacking": Thanks to his Chaos Magecraft and his Void element affinity, Flat is capable of tapping into Mana and everything that it is used in. In other words, he can access almost anything that uses magical energy, including enemy spells, Workshops (aka large magical areas that belong to a single person), and even other's Magic Circuits.
Clairvoyance: Flat seems to have some sense of clairvoyance in canon, being able to see through solid objects and also has been described as being able to 'see far'. However, there is not much else that is known about it. It is mostly likely due to this that Flat is capable of seeing what is known only as 'it', and it is something that only he is able to see. While we do not know much about it, we know that it is something that both terrified his parents into trying to kill him and that it is also the thing that saved him from being killed in the first place. No one else is able to see this either, so far.

AU CHARACTER NAME: Flat

AU BACKSTORY:
- The Escardos family had once been a great family that lived in the coasts of Monaco. Their history dates them back almost two millennia ago, as Mages that had found the methods to prolong their lives for hundreds of years before anyone else could. It had been said that one of the greatest Mages that came from their family had lived over three centuries.
But none of them believed such a thing now.
In reality, the Escardos family was quite ordinary in terms of Mages. In the past few centuries, there hadn't been even one Mage to make it close to a hundred and fifty years old. They kept their fame through spells that were said to have advanced life preservation properties, but not even their own heirs could figure out a way to decipher them. No matter what they did, they couldn't advance and improve. They even feared that they would lose their position as Mages and become ordinary humans--
It's in that moment when a singularity was born. With an amount of magic that was practically unheard of for generations and generations and the instinctive control over it, he was miracle that the family had been praying for. Their child, though somewhat strange at first, was exactly what they wanted. He was the one that was going to rebuild their family and bring it back to what it was once supposed to be. Or at least, that's what they thought.
As if possessed, with eyes that seemed to see through everyone in the room at the time, the boy gave his very first prophecy. Terrified of the idea of facing their impending doom and much more at the hands of someone they had considered as their son, his parents did the only thing that came to their minds. Multiple times they tried to get rid of their prodigy child, seeing him as a threat that needed to be eliminated. But the boy was faster, his visions saving him each time--physically, at least. Psychologically, he was terrified, not only of his parents, but of himself and what he saw. Visions of death, visions of the end, occasionally blacking out and coming back to with papers written in ciphers that he never remembered learning about but somehow understanding them as easily as he would French or English. He didn't know what to do-- letting himself get killed was out of the question, but accepting something that caused his parents to hate him in such a way was out of the question.
Eventually, his parents gave up-- there was no way to kill someone that could see their own death coming. So they sent him far away, where he would be unable to affect them in any sort of way, under the guise of unveiling their prodigy before he was even ten years old. And while teachers and students alike were impressed at first, that would only last a while before it was replaced by fear. The boy was too skilled, he was too terrifying, there was no way that he could be human--
--he had to be from the Outlands. Some sort of creature posing as a human, having taken the place of the child that was supposed to be the Escardos' son. It did not help that, when the prophecy came to fruition and the family died (a calculated attack from those trying to bring forth Nightfall), the boy had no reaction. It was something he had foreseen long ago-- he had already accepted it as their fate. Others, however, saw it as definite proof of the child's inhumanity. No child could be that emotionless over the death of their own parents. And though he was smart, a genius even, he was still a child in the end. Slowly, he began to believe those that surrounded him, taking to heart the comments and fears from those around him. Perhaps he was a monster. Perhaps he was one of those that were meant to bring forth the Nightfall, taking the world to its ruin.
And yet he continued to smile, always smiling to keep himself from falling apart completely. When forcing it on his own became too much, he began using the magic that he loathes as a crutch. His self hatred has begun to reach the point that he has begun to reject his own abilities and the world that surrounds him-- if Nightfall wants to come, then let it. Accepting the idea of being a monster, the boy has thrown his name away, choosing something new to separate himself from the family he once belonged to-- Flat.
Daybreak Academy sets its eyes on Flat thanks to the recommendation of a teacher in Flat's latest school. A dark prophecy foretelling the coming of Nightfall followed by a demon being summoned to wreck havoc in the dorms-- though there's no proof that Flat was at fault of the latter, no other student had the amount of magical energy necessary to summon it besides him.
Coming to Daybreak, Flat is pushed up not one or two grades, but pushed all the way to the undergraduate courses--but it seems that he's still rather uninterested in his studies, finding them dull.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION:
- Flat's biggest deviation comes from the fact that he lacks a guiding figure in his life. In canon, he was able to be saved from despair thanks to his Professor's presence, who he met when he was ten. At fifteen, he's not yet completely broken, but he's definitely more warped than his original canon version.
Due to this, he truly does see himself as a monster, and has thrown aside his real name as proof of this. Along with that, he's more eager to act on his own amoral instincts--another's life means little to him and he has no qualms in putting people in danger for his own interests.
RACE: Mage
SECRET SOCIETY:The Escardos family was a high standing family of Mages for over 2 millennia but about four or so years ago they were wiped off the map due to an organized attack from enemies. He himself has no interest in any of the secret societies, finding the politics behind them to be rather ridiculous.
POWERS:
- Clairvoyance: Flat's biggest power seems to be his clairvoyance. Because he has rejected his abilities though, he has very little control over what he sees, when he sees them, or how he sees them. Sometimes they come to him in the form of a something that tells him what's to come. Other times, it's as if something takes control of him, speaking through him like he's a puppet or a mouthpiece for something else. As some would say, he has eyes that "can see far".
Magic: Similar to canon, Flat has an incredible ability in Magic, being able to instinctively learn and use spells that most people would have a hard time with. The biggest caveat, however, is his own eccentricity. None of the spells that he's able to use can be recreated and he doesn't really understand how he manages to use these spells either. He just knows that he can and therefore he does. His specialties, however, seem to lie in "hacking" into other people's magic, illusions, and healing.
Magic Resistance: Because he's so skilled in magic, he's also highly skilled in repelling magic that comes from others. Therefore, he's able to brush off most curses without even blinking, and will be able to see past most glamours and illusions.

INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT
2. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE FUTURE?
- That's a weird question for a school that's trying to somehow stop the end of the world. Isn't that like throwing a pebble at the reflection of the moon, hoping to reach it some day? [ flat laughs, shaking his head ] But I guess I'd like to see a movie next week? That's in the future!
3. DESCRIBE YOUR IDEA OF AN IDEAL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.
- Probably not a place that trains children to fight their futile wars for them. But that doesn't matter to you guys, right?
5. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MOST LIMITS YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL?
- Hm? I don't know what you're talking about, I'm definitely doing my best here! (lie)
6. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?
- Most of the stuff they teach here are things I already know or can find out on my own. Pass.
7. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?
- They're all boring.
8. WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN OUTSIDE YOUR EDUCATION?
- Video games! I also like watching movies-- sometimes I do both!
10. WHEN UNDER PRESSURE OF A TIGHT DEADLINE, HOW DO YOU RESPOND?
- Depends? If it's something I want to do, then I'll get it done. If not, then what's the point of working on it in the first place?
12. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
- I've never worked in a group. But I think I'd just do as I like-- it's impossible for me to understand how those people feel or think
13. DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN RELY ON YOUR PEERS, OR DO YOU FEEL YOU MUST EXCEL ON YOUR OWN?
- Why depend on someone when you can do it yourself? They'll just mess it up or make it boring.
14. IN THIS EVER-CHANGING WORLD, WHAT MOST EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE?
- The idea of Nightfall is pretty cool, if I had to say so myself. Don't they say that it's survival of the fittest? Therefore it'll be interesting to see just who wins when the day comes-- and humans are pretty inefficient creatures. So I'd really like to see that.
15. WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE DO YOU FEAR THE MOST?
- I've been seeing the future all my life, I don't fear anything about it.
16. WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU HOPE TO HOLD AT THE END OF YOUR JOURNEY?
- I wonder how many of us will be alive once it's all over. In the end, most of us will only end up as that-- memories. But will those memories really matter when it's all burning to ashes? What do you think?
17. WHAT IN THE FUTURE DO YOU MOST LOOK FORWARD TO?
- Nothing. And you?
