a reason to fight.

The scene is a rooftop. The sun is setting, and everyone is preparing for battle-- yourself included. You and the wristwatch--your Servant, Jack the Ripper--discuss how thankful they are for how things are going. Negotiations are smooth, full thanks to the Professor that has raised you for ten years, and it seems that there's finally a plan in place to save the young comatose girl from her own Servant.

Everything is smooth. You both give your hopes that the girl survives the move, and there's a calm silence that follows...until the watch poses a question that takes you by surprise.

"Why are you trying to save that girl?"

You don't know how to answer. All the words die at the tip of your tongue, and you try to stammer a response that your Servant quickly refutes. It's not natural to go this far for anyone else. No one would risk their life twice over for a stranger that they've never spoken to, and much less in a war. People aren't that strong, they say. And if they are, then they had to have a reason to become that way.

It's in that moment, that you realize why you're going this far for a mere stranger. "It's simple," you say, that same easygoing smile on your face. "It's because of the professor."

Immediately, the Servant understands. But you continue talking, detailing a near-death experience that your Professor saved you from. It was your blunder, your mistake, and yet this Professor put everything on the line to rescue you and your friend from certain death. There is a wistfulness in your voice, emotions slowly detaching as you dig deeper into your own being.

"If this ended up being just my problem, I'd abandon that girl for my goal. I might even take the initiative and kill her like an ordinary mage." There is no response from Jack. They know very well that this is the life that magi live; sacrificing others for their own gain. You know this as well. But it is not the life that you want to lead. Whatever void was in your emotions disappears in a moment, as you smile with confidence. "But before I'm a mage of the Escardos family, I'm Flat Escardos of the El Melloi School. Since I've been in that school, my life has stopped being just my problem. Abandoning that girl now would mean betraying the professor and everyone at school. To me, that's...as scary as losing my goal as a mage."

There is silence. The hands on the watch move in something you interpret as nodding, and they accept your answer.

Now it's your turn for a question. You ask why they don't object to his plan, pointing out how such a plan goes against everything that the Grail War is about. But Jack is quick with their response, said with equal confidence as you.

"It's simple. I've simply been influenced by your teacher, Lord ElMelloi II myself."
