Are you really putting yourself down? My word, Mr. Escardos, if you had any lower self esteem I'd wonder how you'd believe in yourself enough to keep breathing!
Come now, Mr. Escardos. Your actions are screaming louder than your words.
[He's taking out his pipe to stand with it, pensively.]
Regardless, I know there are rules in place. Do tell your..."friend"... [He winks at Flat.]...that I would most welcome more of such messages to look over. I do deduce that you have at least reached out to several others about this message already, but I am glad to be included in that number.
[ something in flat stirs and wonders if defenestration is a good way to get rid of someone that knows too much.
no, just kidding.
flat huffs, fishing out of his pocket three notes. the one they all received last friday, the response to the crier note on sunday, and the note from tuesday. ]
These three notes are from different handwriting, sir. But I want to know if you’re familiar with any of these—it might sound silly, but I think that I’m either talking to a group of people or maybe even someone who can switch up their handwriting.
[He peers over them, even flipping down his goggles to take a look.]
Can't say that I do...but however. Putting notes out in the open has welcome many to stick their hands in the pot. I do think it is not unlikely there is more than one person to a role, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone is aiming to try to put their foot in the door.
[A pause.]
I will have to gather handwriting samples, regardless. Then we can see what dredges up from this chaotic muck.
We could...but I was thinking of a simpler trap. You see, people are eager to respond to things left out in the open. How about...a poll, of a sort? Have people respond, and then use that to compare to these.
One wonders, if you're so curious as to find the owners of these notes! But of course, yes, rules are rules. I know for a fact one can't go straying out of them, and the last thing I want is for our mutual "friend" to get in trouble. But I am here to help, all the same. [And a shake of the head.] You really should have come to me earlier! Tsk, tsk, keeping things from a great detective like myself.
I could never think about lying to a great detective unless it’s for a good reason! And even then, I was no good at it.
[ he laughs sheepishly, like a child that just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. ]
I’ve asked other people, sure. But I don’t want to tell you who I have reached out to yet. Putting myself into danger is fine, but I won’t break their trust.

[ a beat. ]
And my self-esteem is fine, sir!

[HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM]
Mighty words for someone who puts themselves down in the same breath as "my self-esteem is fine".

[ WHAT DO YOU THINK HE HAS? DEPRESSION? ]
E-either way, if it were me, I’d have told you! Don’t you think I’d go to a detective for help?!

[And a blink.]
Is that not what you're doing now?

No. Besides, you don’t have any more proof.

Fine.
[ he sOUNDS IRRITATED. ]
But if you’re going to know, I want two things in return!

Very well! Ask of me anything you like!

Mister Sholmes, I really like you. I do! But how can I trust you?

[And a wink.]
But one must know, as much as a great detective is wont to lie, I never lie for myself.
